UPstart is run by lead instructor, Lowell Simon. Lowell has started and owned numerous small businesses over a 30 year career. In 2006 he sold Fuel Mate Express and spent a year in retirement. That just wasn't for him, so in the Fall of 2007 he joined the staff of Union Pines High School as a math teacher. In 2013 he was asked to create the then un-named Entrepreneurship program. He has been responsible for creating the curriculum, recruiting students and designing the "cool space" developed by former Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence and then UP principal, Robin Lea.
In 2014, Dr. Aaron Spence said the desire to grow UPstart is due in large part to its successes at Union Pines, "What Lowell is getting done is awesome" said Spence.
Lowell has been married to his wife Amy for over 30 years and they have three adult children; Matt, Isaac and Risa. All of whom graduated from Pinecrest High School.
