Vikings Gaming Club
Robotics, application design, 3D printing, driverless cars, cyber-security, data mining – I could certainly go on for a while. What do these all have in common? Computers. What is the entry point to computers for teenagers? Video games.
In 2015, 36 million individuals streamed the League of Legends World Finals online. In 2016 more than 32 million fans streamed the Worlds Finals. The semi-finals sold out almost 20,000 seats at Madison Square Garden in New York and over 20,000 seats were filled for the Worlds at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. The tournament had an official prize pool of over $5 million.
Last fall UC Irvine launched an e-sports initiative, the first of its kind at a public research university. Columbia College offers scholarship programs for League of Legends players. Last year, Robert Morris University became the first college to add eSports to its athletic program. The University of Pikeville in Kentucky has 20 scholarships for League of Legends players. Maryville University in St. Louis, and Southwestern University also launched eSports scholarship programs.
Union Pines High School’s Viking Gaming Club (VGC) is a competitive gaming club. The idea of creating friendships, team building experiences and an inclusive gaming culture forms the heart of our organization. The Club is targeted at video gamers who have previously not had any extracurricular or after school programming available to them. As students who traditionally do not participate in school athletics, music or art, these kids have been under-serviced by our school system. They are typically high academic achievers who are not inclined toward social activity. We currently have twenty team members divided into Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. These teams are enrolled in the national High School Star League and are competing with over 400 schools across the country. We are working to develop a girl’s team as well. With the support of the County IT department we have been able to create a “pop-up” gaming center running on ten laptops. The Vikings Gaming Club focuses on popular titles beginning with the MOBA style game, League of Legends. Other games we will feature include Rocket League, Overwatch, Pokemon and Counter Strike.
Our plan is to create a County league that will include teams from all four high schools in a points-to-playoffs format. Games can be viewed by hundreds of students in a video stage environment or even from the comfort of their bedrooms, just like any other sporting event.
